Devils Backbone Ridge
Sebastian County, Arkansas

Devils Backbone is a east-west trending ridgeline that locally retains pockets of uncut old growth post oak woodlands, particularly on the ridge crest and south-facing slopes. This site is located near the eastern limit of the Cross Timbers biogeographic province. The RNA is on Fort Chaffee, Arkansas, and is now used as a National Guard training facility. Access is strictly controlled. Work on the installation of a research natural area is underway at Devils Backbone, in collaboration with Dr. Don Bragg, Southern Research Station, U.S. Forest Service, Monticello, Arkansas. Another photograph of the ancient post oak and thick herbaceous vegetation at Devils Backbone is presented on our home page.
